Multi-disciplinary acute stroke unit

The acute stroke unit is part of the department of Neurology. All acute patients with acute stroke syndromes (cerebral infarction, cerebral haemorrhage, sinus thrombosis) are admitted to this ward.

It is equipped with ten beds with monitoring for the acute treatment, four beds for further treatment and a room for physical therapy.

The team of the unit consists of physicians, specially trained nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists, ergotherapists and case manager.

The team organises subsequent rehabilitation.

The unit's objectives are to provide a quick multi-disciplinary diagnosis of the causes of the apoplectic stroke (heart, cerebral circulation, risk factors), an improvement of acute treatment (e.g. by i.v. lysis therapy) and an early rehabilitation of neurological deficits. The stroke unit works closely together with the departments of radiology, cardiology, endoscopy and diabetes of the St. Vincenz Hospital.
