Centre for diabetes and metabolic medicine
Multi-disciplinary centre for diabetes
About seven per cent of the German population suffer from the metabolic disease diabetes mellitus. It is the centre's objective to provide an integrated outpatient-inpatient care and information for diabetics while involving their social environment. Only the holistic identification and treatment of all the problems associated with diabetes mellitus can guarantee that frequently occurring complications such as an increased risk of renal diseases, cardiac arrests, loss of eyesight and amputations of feet can be avoided. These consecutive effects of diabetes call for individual care.
Pregnant diabetics, patients treated with an insulin pump as well as patients whose diabetes is hard to stabilize are taken care of in the special outpatient clinic for diabetes.
An important task of a centre for diabetes is the inpatient and outpatient treatment of patients with a 'diabetic foot'. This task can only be completed by a team of doctors who do the various jobs involved: diagnostics, blood sugar stabilization, blood pressure stabilization and wound care. In an interdisciplinary collaboration, we provide the full range of modern diagnostic procedures for disorders of the vascular system (Doppler- and duplex ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and contrast medium examinations) as well as all modern therapies (expansion of vascular occlusions, bypass operations, the complete spectrum of wound management).
A consultant for diabetics executes special trainings. A chiropodist performs the appropriate pedicure if required. Another very important member of the team is the orthopaedic shoemaker who provides the patients with shoes adapted to their respective needs, such as the diabetes protection shoe or custom-made orthopaedic shoes, and other custom-made devices, such as decompression braces.
Due to the 'Fußsprechstunde' (foot consultation hour), providing outpatient as well as inpatient care, only serious problems concerning the feet are treated on an inpatient basis.
