General, vascular and visceral surgery
The department of general, vascular and visceral surgery (head physician, assistant professor U. A. Heuschen MD), is concerned with the conservative and operative treatment of benign and malign diseases of the pectoral and abdominal cavities, the thyroid gland as well as acute and chronic diseases of the blood vessels.
We cover the whole spectrum of visceral surgery:
Eendocrine surgery covers e.g benign and malign diseases of the thyroid gland, the parathyroid gland, the adrenal gland as well as rare hormonopoetic tumours of the gastrointestinal tract.
In gastrointestinal surgery, we treat benign diseases of the oesophagus, the stomach, the liver, the pancreas, the spleen and the bowels. Our gentle treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (Chron's disease and ulcerative colitits) is renowned nationwide.
Oncologic surgery covers malign tumours of the oesophagus, the stomach, the pancreas, the liver, the bile ducts and gall bladder, as well as the colon. A main focus is the treatment of bowel tumours without artificial anus. Our department is part of a multi-disciplinary centre for oncosis, collaborating with the departments of oncology and radio-therapy as well as the medical department, all of which are situated under the same roof. Whenever possible and appropriate, we perform even complex surgical procedures using minimal-invasive techniques (buttonhole incisions), in order to reduce the physiologic strain for the patient as well as their inpatient stay.
The section of vascular surgery (Felicitas Rabe-Schmidt MD) is concerned with the treatment of acute and chronic vascular occlusions of the arteries of the abdominal organs, the pelvic arteries, the arteries of lower limb and the common carotid artery, as well as sacculations of the lower principal arteries. In close collaboration with other specialist departments (radiology, neurology and nephrology), we develop an individualized concept of treatment answering questions as to whether an operative or a non-operative therapy should be employed. We also perform varicose vein rescections and install arteriovenous shunts or dialysis catheters. Furthermore, we implant ports for chemotherapy or artificial nutrition. In collaboration with the department of cardiology we implant cardiac pacemakers.
