Oral and maxillofacial surgery

Dr Dr med dent Juergen Schaefer and Benito Oroval, specialists for oral and maxillofacial surgery, have been working as practitioners with cottage-hospital affiliation at the St Vincenz hospital since February 2003. Because of this, we have qualified specialists for oral and maxillofacial surgery at our disposal. The qualification for this special field of medicine requires a university degree in human as well as in oral medicine, followed by a long-lasting training in specialised clinical centres. This profound training provides that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a specialist for diseases of the teeth, the oral cavity as well as the whole face.

The oral and maxillofacial surgeon is specially trained for dental implantations. Therefore, he can perform prosthetic dentistry, e.g. via osteoplasty, even in complicated cases. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon treats diseases of the maxillary antrum and the mandibular joint, and attends on casualties with serious injuries as well as patients with congenital malformations of the face. Furthermore, he performs complicated corrections of jaw malpositions and dental anomalies. Because of their surgical experience and their particular anatomic knowledge of facial structures, the dentofacial surgeons also perform cosmetic surgery, such as corrections of the ears and the nose, lifting of the eyelids as well as the whole face and the neck.
