Traumatology and orthopaedic surgery

Being responsible for the treatment of accident casualties, the department covers the whole acute traumatology including fractures, soft parts and joint surgery. Furthermore, we have specialised in emergency treatment and elective procedures in case of hand injuries. In addition, we provide neurotraumatology, i.e. surgery for severe head injuries (epi- and subdural haematoma) and spine injuries.

Main focus of the orthopaedic surgery is the provision with endoprostheses for all major joints in case of arthrosis or after accidents. Besides this, we perform corrections in case of angular malalignment including the distraction of bony callus for the treatment of defects and the elongation of extremities. Spine surgery uses a variety of procedures from the minimal-invasive kyphoplasty to the replacement of vertebral bodies in case of fractures or tumours.

The minimal-invasive method 'kyphoplasty' is a procedure which has only recently been developed in the USA and that is being performed in only a few medical centres in Germany. A balloon is inserted into the broken vertebral body via two tiny holes in order to re-erect the collapsed bone. This is done by filling the void with specific biological bone cement. The patient can get up right after the intervention and will feel a significant reduction of pain as well as functional improvement in most of the cases.

Modern foot surgery corrects malpositions or arthrosis operatively. Sports traumatology is the third main focus of the department. Here, we treat meniscal tears, ligament injuries and chronic instabilities of ligaments via arthroscopy. In addition, we offer bone-cartilage transplantation and the surgical treatment of instabilities of the shoulder joint.
