The nursing school at the St Vincenz Hospital
The principle of our nursing philosophy is that we treat our patients as whole persons and do not reduce them to clinical pictures or disease patterns. And it is our greatest concern to convey this principle to the students of our nursing school, which has been providing qualified education for generations now. At the moment, 75 young people are training for a job in nursing care here.
Since April 1995 the nursing school of the St Vincenz Hospital resides in its own rooms at the foot of the Schafsberg. It has developed from humble beginnings in 1927 into an important institution of our house. About half of its students stay with the hospital after they have completed their education.
The connection of theory and practice is the centrepiece of teaching and learning at our nursing school. The students are appointed to different wards according to a fixed schedule. This includes assignments in welfare centres, since treatment on an outpatient basis has become ever more important.
Franz-Josef Pitton is the school's headmaster, the head physician of the department of neurology, Christoph Overwittler MD, its medical supervisor.

Information concerning the vocational education:
One third of the education consists of theoretical and practical trainings. Classes are held in blocks and single schooldays respectively. Location is the nursing school.
Two thirds of the education consist of practical assignments. The students are appointed to wards and functional units of the hospital as well as the centre for social psychiatry in Hadamar (for five weeks) and the Caritas welfare centre (for six weeks).
In order to get an insight into nightshifts, the students are appointed to an ordinary ward as well as to an intensive care unit for six nights each in their second and third year.
The first six months of the education are considered as probationary period. After the completion of the first half of the education there is an intermediate examination. The final exam is subdivided into three parts: an oral exam, a written exam, and a practical examination. You have to pass all three parts to become a registered nurse.
During their education the students receive a remuneration:
- During the first year: € 698.00,
- During the second year: € 755.00, and
- During the third year: € 847.00.
All students up to their 29th year of age have an entitlement to holidays of 26 days, referring to the five-day week. 4/5 of these days are planned by the school, the rest is at the student's disposal.
